Different Names for Different Places
When one is purchasing cannabis, it is a good idea to know what kind of strain you are getting. The terminology can vary from region to region, so what is good in one location may not necessarily be as good in another. However, any seasoned bud smoker can tell the difference between good and bad weed simply by how it looks and smells. If you aren’t confident in your ability to determine the quality of your marijuana, then it might be a good idea to have a more experienced smoker come along for the ride. Picking up marijuana on the street is just asking for a bad price as one can get a medical marijuana card easily these days with very little money down. In the end, most of the marijuana one purchases will get them high. It is only a matter of how high they will get from strain to strain.
As I said before, there are all kinds of different names for good and bad bud and they vary from place to place. In the greater Los Angeles area, there are lots of different terms used to refer to all kinds of marijuana. Kush is generally reserved for the best weed. Many strains one can pick up at dispensaries have Kush in their names and they are usually good strains. The next common name given to good buds is Chronic. I have heard many arguing that Chronic strains are Indicas and Kush strains are usually Sativas. While this may be true some of the time, I don’t find it to be true all of the time. Next we come to Stress which is just a generic name given to any dirt weed that is undesirable. Do your best to stay away from these strains as they are the ones that most prominently cause headaches upon smoking and result in less than stellar highs.
Kush, Chronic, and Stress
Kush is definitely the cream of the crop if you are looking for one word that describes good weed. These strains usually have higher concentrations of THC and produce better highs in general. Most of the time, Kush is grown with a hydroponic system which is the reason for its potency and great smell. These strains are usually much better groomed than the others as to catch the eye of smoking experts more easily. Grooming buds is the practice of cutting leaves off of the nugs leaving nothing but pure smoking heaven. If you have a nice strain of weed that gets you high, people will rarely correct you if you refer to it as Kush, though some people are just smoking experts and may know more about the plant than you do.
Chronic is another term that is commonly used to refer to dank cannabis. While it is true that the term is often associated with the couch lock symptoms of indicas, not all strains of Chronic are Indicas. Some people use these two terms interchangeably, but Chronic more accurately means good marijuana. Most who use these terms tend to reserve Kush for the best strains of weed while Chronic is another step down the ladder. This is not to say that these types of weed will not get you high, they are simply not as potent as Kush tends to be. In reality, whether you are told your bud is Kush or Chronic doesn’t matter much as both are terms used to refer to good marijuana with desirable qualities. But the absolute best way to determine the quality of your bud is to look at it and smell it. Even relatively new smokers will be able to tell the difference between good and bad weed with a little practice.
Stress is a term reserved for the worst of worst in marijuana. There are many other terms that can refer to such weed, but Stress is by far the most common. This weed is usually not groomed at all, so you will find lots of leaves, stems, and seeds along with your nugs. The main reason that this is so undesirable is that all of that stuff you don’t want to smoke will still go towards the weight on the scale! Apart from the unattractive looks of this weed, it just plain tastes and smells bad too. There are not a lot of redeeming factors to cannabis of this caliber no matter how one looks at it. And to make matters worse, Stress is known to cause headaches in many individuals when smoked. When you factor in a bad high as well, it is clear to see why most people stay away from Stress at all costs.
Sativa and Indica
Next, we come to the two more scientific terms for cannabis. Sativa is the first we will be talking about and for good reason. Strains of the sativa variety are known for the giggly head high they give and this is what most people think of when smoking marijuana. Physically, the leaves are what gives away the Sativa plant. They are long and thin and are often sparse on the plant itself. Sativa strains are often taller than their Indica counterparts and along with their signature leaves, they are easy to pick out in a field. If you are looking for a euphoric feeling of well-being, then Sativas are probably the type of marijuana for you. In medical marijuana patients, these strains are useful in treating pain and are probably more favored than the other variety of marijuana.
Indica strains are the kind that give the smoker a body buzz. Users often report being couch locked from feeling so good after smoking strains of the Indica variety. When one looks at an Indica plant, they are much shorter and compact than Sativas are. These plants will have a much bushier appearance and the leaves, though still retaining the signature star shape, are much less identifiable than those of Sativas are. If one didn’t know what to look for, these plants might look like an ordinary shrub to them. Indicas are often prescribed to patients that have trouble sleeping as it is a great sleep aid. No matter what kind of marijuana you are smoking, the feeling will generally be the same. It is just the smell and concentration of THC that varies from strain to strain.
