In most of the states with medical marijuana programs in our country, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is an accepted condition that one can treat with medical marijuana. But New Mexico wants to change this rule in their state. If this idea is passed, then it’s only a matter of time before other non physical conditions like depression and anxiety are removed from the list of accepted ailments which one can treat with marijuana.

Medical Marijuana in New Mexico

purple weedThere are over 3,000 medical marijuana patients in New Mexico that suffer from PTSD today. Taking their medicine away is simply not right. Many people have tried pill after pill, and the only thing that really treats their symptoms is marijuana. Many PTSD sufferers and medical marijuana patients are forming a campaign called Don’t Take Away Our Medicine. This campaign ought to help get the message out there that PTSD is a real disorder that marijuana can treat. In order to allow continued access to this medicine that many people need, members of the campaign are urging all New Mexican residents to provide a signature and to tell the Governor and Secretary of Rights to deny this crazy request to remove PTSD as an accepted medical marijuana ailment.

Real Life Stories

Here’s what he had to say about medical marijuana and his PTSD. “When I returned home from Afghanistan I was diagnosed with PTSD. I worked with my doctor and tried many prescription drugs. Taking handfuls of pills every day, every one with a different set of side effects was hard on my body, and I still experienced some symptoms,” said Michael. “Cannabis was not my first choice of medicine, but I tell you first hand, this medicine works for me. Cannabis allows me to leave my house and has helped me to return to work.” There are countless other stories like this that William Ulwelling, the man who submitted the request to discontinue PTSD as a medical marijuana ailment, is determined to just sweep under the rug.

Time Is Running Out

capsules for daysUlwelling’s petition will be heard by the Medical Advisory Board on November 7th from 1 – 5 PM in Santa Fe. Sadly, there is not much we can do now but to hope for the best for all of those suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Residents of New Mexico can still make a difference by signing onto the campaign and letting everyone know what you think. This is a slippery slope that we are starting to go down if one non physical ailment gets banned from medical marijuana. It’s easy to imagine depression and other such ailments being removed as a qualifying condition for medical marijuana. If you really want to make a difference for sufferers of PTSD, then sign your name to the Don’t Take Our Medicine Away campaign and let the whole state of New Mexico know exactly how you feel.
