After the recent election on November 6th, President Barack Obama was elected for a second term in office. This was obviously the biggest news for our country on this day, but pulling a close second were all the various marijuana reforms that passed. Massachusetts became the 18th state in the country to pass a medical marijuana program. More importantly though, both Colorado and Washington both made world history by legalizing and taxing marijuana!
Federal Raids on State Clinics
The one negative thing about Barack Obama is that he has had a nasty reputation of being the most active president ever in raiding marijuana dispensaries. While these places are legal on a state level, they are technically federally illegal. This means that the government has the freedom do whatever they want to these clinics and that has got to stop. Some of these awful raids seize property from the dispensary owners and claim it as their own. If Obama wants to get on the side of marijuana lovers, he is going to have to end this corruption in these federal raids. All we can do is hope until Barack Obama makes his first major move during his second term as president. I hope that he will have a change of heart this time and go through with his old promises.
Why He Flip Flopped
I’m sure that most of us still remember all of the changes Barack Obama was promising for marijuana when trying to get into office. Sadly, he never instituted any of these changes and just continued raiding on state clinics. Perhaps this will change though now that he has been elected for a second term as president of the United States. One popular belief is that presidents don’t usually make their risky moves until they are re-elected. Because of the fear he has for his political career, Obama did not want to legalize marijuana during his first term. Perhaps now that he knows he is in the White House for another four years, he will make good on some of these old promises. We will never really know what caused Obama to change his mind, but this is certainly a logical explanation for what happened back then.
Pressure Building Up
With the recent legalization of marijuana in Colorado and Washington. Barack Obama now faces even more pressure from the rest of the country to push marijuana legalization further along. This is only made worse by Massachusetts becoming yet another state with a medical marijuana program. Times of change are upon us and I think that the president can see that. The fate of marijuana in this country is ultimately up to him, at least for the next four years. Let’s just hope that Obama can make something happen for all the hard work marijuana activists have been putting in over these last few years. Maybe our whole country will legalize pot one day, but that day still seems a ways away no matter which way you look at it.
