This is an unprecedented time of change in the world concerning the legal status of marijuana. Most political jurisdictions in the world have this drug outlawed, but there are two which have recently legalized it right here in our country. This has caused a lot of commotion around the world, and rightfully so. The United States was once at the front of the campaign against legal marijuana, and two of these states have recently legalized the drug.

Mexico and Legal Marijuana

Lawreal life flag of mexicomakers in the country of Mexico have recently filed a proposal for marijuana legalization. This makes Mexico the second Latin American country to attempt to legalize cannabis, with the first being Uruguay. While neither of these bills are expected to pass by those educated on the subject, it is amazing that the legalization of marijuana in Colorado and Washington has inspired people world wide to make a change. This idea is mostly due to the fact that Mexico has long expressed their discontent at US drug policies. The recent legalization in the United States did not help this position at all. While Mexico decriminalized small amounts of certain drugs in the year 2009, most people still believe that this will not lead to legal marijuana in Mexico. Even though it is not expected to pass, this is still a big step for marijuana activists everywhere as yet another country has grown more comfortable with the idea of ending cannabis prohibition.

Legalizing Cannabis Around the World

burning joint smoke weedThe battle will never be over for avid marijuana activists until this plant is legalized all across the world. This might seem like a hard task to perform at present, but we have made more progress in the past couple months than we have in decades of marijuana prohibition. Now is the time for people to wake up and see that marijuana is not half as bad as it seems. Currently, it is the most criminalized substance in the US as about 90% of drug related arrests are made for marijuana alone. This recreational drug needs to be seen for what it is rather than what the government wants it seen as. If we can all realize that marijuana is a recreational drug just like tobacco and alcohol, the United States and indeed the entire world would be much less misinformed. Hopefully, the US has started a trend that will continue in other places around the world.

News About Marijuana in the US

medical marijuana in the usAll of these debates that have recently been started concerning marijuana are due to the changes made in the United States in the most recent election. Two US states legalized marijuana completely in Colorado and Washington. This legal marijuana is regulated and taxed just like other recreational drugs helping people see it for what it really is. Massachusetts also made the news by becoming the eighteenth state to institute a medical marijuana program. Massachusetts citizens can now receive their medical marijuana card from a special doctor and proceed to purchase cannabis at one of their local dispensaries. Perhaps President Barack Obama, who was re-elected as President of the United States during these recent elections, will be able to change the minds of US citizens and return to his old campaign promises of furthering the cause to end marijuana prohibition.
