Much different than similar poll results earlier this year, recent results show that the overwhelming majority of the United States is opposed to the war on drugs. When you look at the facts, it is easy to see why this is so. We are spending billions of dollars every year on something that isn’t even succeeding. With the recent legalization of marijuana in two of our United States, this topic has become even hotter are debates spark up all around the country. The American are actually quite well informed when it comes to the war on the drugs.

Good Intentions Gone Bad

uncle sam warWhile the war on drugs started as a way to keep our kids off the street and to catch dealers of hard drugs, it has become somewhat of a joke today. The overwhelming majority of arrests are for small amounts of marijuana while the sneakier drug dealers are shipping cocaine into the country. While I understand where the government is coming from, I think it’s time that we give up on this phony war and start spending money on things that matter. One stat shows that the US has spent between 20 and 25 billion dollars each year on this war for the past ten years. This is so much wasted money that it makes me sick. If the government insists on finding drug users out, they should at least go after those that can cause harm to themselves and others. Marijuana is not a dangerous drug and should no longer be treated as such.

Stats of the Recent Poll

But the most recent results show that 82% of Americans now believe this to be true! What’s more, only 7% thought the war was a success while the remaining 12% were undecided. The country is split right down the middle when it comes to marijuana legalization. 45% of Americans believe that weed should be legalized, and the same amount of people believe the opposite. The state of marijuana in our country will likely be decided by the 10% of voters who were undecided. Finally, Americans also realize that marijuana is safer than the more popular recreational drug, alcohol. 51% of Americans said Alcohol was more dangerous while only 24% thought marijuana was.

How to Fix This

anti war on drugs
In order to make amends for all the money lost to this silly war on drugs, I believe the government needs to end this program entirely. While I’m sure it was conceived with only the best intentions, they have been twisted and screwed to fit the views of those in power over the years. Marijuana is not a threat to our society. While it might make you a little lazy, it is not going to make you kill someone or go crazy as the government once claimed it would. Marijuana is a relatively safe recreational drug that is increasing in popularity as more and more people are seeing it for what it is.
